Latin Pharma firms continue to make headlines. Now the Mega Pharma group has bought the Uruguayan drugmaker Celsius in a move that will give it control over 30% of the medicines market in Uruguay.

Latin giant Mega Pharma continues to expand reinforcing its operations in the continent. Pharmabiz has learned that the holding company, owned by Thomas Struengmann, has acquired another firm in its home country of Uruguay. See article.

The firm in question is Celsius, which will now fall under the wing of Roemmers Uruguay, the name of the company that the Roemmers family stepped aside from just months ago. Pharmabiz believes the acquisition to be worth close to US$ 66 million. See official document.

Of course, it’s not the first major operation for Mega in the last decade. Two years ago it bought Spefar via an injection of around US$ 40 million. Before that, in 2012, it had bagged Clausen, and in 2009 it bought ServimedicSee articleSee articleSee article.

Mega Pharma has other companies under its umbrella. In 2016, it bought Spefar, in 2012 Clausen; and in 2009 Servimedic.

The transaction means that Celsius, which was founded in 1936 and is managed by Bettina Correa Rivero, joined the list of companies under the Mega Pharma umbrella. The company will now reach close to 30% of the Uruguayan market in terms of value, according to data seen by Pharmabiz. See infographic.

In 2010, Celsius inaugurated a plant destined to the manufacture of in vitro diagnostic products, an event that was attended by the then president of Uruguay José «Pepe» Mujica. See article.

The firm has extensive distribution in various Latin American markets, commercialising its products in Peru; Ecuador; Paraguay; Cuba; Guatemala; Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic, among others. See site.
