B&L buys Pförtner in Argentina

Wednesday 30, November 2011

The American pharmaceutical company B&L  acquired Pförtner operations in Argentina.

As Pharmabiz was able to find out, the company will aquire its contact lens processing plant located in Vicente Lopez and all the products under the Waicon brand for a sum close to u$s 20 million.

Through this transaction the Americans are obtaining the main Pförtner added value: their well-oild nationwide distribution system.

Also, they are maintaining the distribution of their brand Natura, the contact lens cleaning solution, leader in the local market.

However, the Pförtner family will keep control of its retail business unit, which competes against chain stores like + Vision, Vision Express, Lof and others.

The company will also retain its contact lens solutions factory located in the city of Morón, Buenos Aires province.

This transaction will also have an impact on the local operations of Johnson & Johnson. J&J heads the contact lens solution sales ranking in Argentina with its line Acuvue soft lenses.

Acuvue distribution was in the hands of Pförtner. This implies that J&J will have to make a quick change of direction to redirect the distribution of its brand.

Pförtner’s decision to sell was taken a year after the death of Klaus Pförtner, founder and visionary creator of the family business. See article.

The Pförtners retail business will continue to be led by Thomas Pförtner, respected and undisputed referent in the field of vision care.

AlsoMáximo will accompany his father in the family business.
