This change comes after the surprise departure of Spaniard Francisco García, who had assumed the role in June 2014. Pharmabiz has learned that his boss, the Spaniard José Marcilla, president for Latin America and Canada, personally delivered the termination notice signed by a notary public. Garcia is not leaving the corporation – he’s employed by Novartis USA so his situation will be resolved there.
Afonso has been with Novartis for nearly two decades and is currently the president for the ACC cluster (Andes, Central America, and the Caribbean) which includes the markets of Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Venezuela, Central America, and the Caribbean. He will therefore have eight countries and two regions under his purview.
Prior to García, the interim president of Novartis Argentina was the Argentinian Carlos Lanardonne. His tenure followed the departure of the Australian Sweta Ghelani. However, after six months, the multinational brought in the Spaniard to occupy the position on a permanent basis, leaving aside a local executive with ample credentials.
